Drugs Addiction and Future of Children

Drug is a like a virus to the society its spreading and destroy people’s lives. Western countries like America, Mexico and European countries like Great Britain, Russia, also Countries such as Afghanistan and Iran are affected by drug virus.

Through so many rules and regulation and security enhancement, Drug problem in Sri Lanka still managed to remarkably expand its wings over the country and according to the records unfortunately drug smugglers are targeting children and youth generation.

From 2011 to 2016 around 551 children are arrested on drug related offences in Sri Lanka. Even students from very younger age have been dependent on drugs.

Government has held many seminars and programs to educate students, teachers and school society to prevent students from drug addiction. Even though those efforts weren’t being enough to prevent spreading this addiction. So many drug dealers are doing business near school areas and tuition class areas using many forms of drug mixed products to addict children to drugs.

In addition to Spray cola and soft drinks, there are sweets, medicine and energy drink for sale. Spray cola said to be have high dose of drugs to make children addicted to drugs. and these products is causing hallucinations has same effects like drug users have.

Police have raided a shop, near a school in Negombo in 2015 have found pills that prescribe for mentally ill persons. These pills have sold to students and drug users as a substitute for narcotics.

In 2018, In Piliyandala area police had captured very popular drug rackets targeting school students .

Batakaththara,Madapatha,L.S watte, Kahapola, Makandana has completely affected by the drug menace as police has revealed.

These drug peddlers have been using new techniques to distribute drugs among children and addict them to drugs. They have used toxic areca nuts, toxic drinks for students age 10 to 14 for a cheap price. Toxic powder and Kerala ganja and tablets have been given to elder students. Police also have revealed that students tend to use drugs in internet cafes. Villagers have stated lots of students addicted to drugs and some left education in school and sell drugs under drug peddlers. So many people are afraid to report about this to police as they are threatened by drug peddlers.

There is a clear image that we can see that and police also has revealed that this drug distribution have done with the help of politicians.

Spreading the drug cancer even to the village side has become great threat to young people’s education and health. When the students become failed in education and in their life because of the drug addiction parents pay the price for neglecting children when they could have pay attention.

Over 250,000 Sri Lanka youth have addicted to drug according to the 2017 records of Dangerous drug control board and young people are taken to rehabilitation from drug addiction.

Drug smuggling have increased so fast even the responsible officers of law can’t track them all. Only they have access to the outer circle of this group. Most of the time only the distributers are captured but not the product owners. So that drug smuggling has not controlled.

Drug exporters must be caught in the airport or port itself. and inside Sri Lanka in far village sides Kansa and other drugs plants are being cultivated by smugglers. City wise all security officer must find drug pots where drugs are distributed.

In Sri Lanka Night party, night club are places where drugs are mostly selling for very higher prices. In recently police have captured foreigner and 2 local people who have been selling a drug called “black mendy” to young people. Those drags are to inject to body via a syringe. 1 mg is worth around Rs. 14,000. Also a drug called “Hashees” is been sold by local people.

If we concern the health of drug addicts its getting worse day by day since the person use drugs. Most of drugs addicts die as a result of drug overdose, heart failure or accidents. For an addict person needs drugs more than anything. Most addict people have no idea of their family members or children. They know only a thing that they need drug to overcome the pain they feel. They will do anything for that. After they addicted to drug they won’t feel high as in the start. They feel pain all over the body on which they think only the drugs can heal the pain.

Because of drug issue, European and American countries dealing with many issues handling citizens lives. Same problems are appearing in Sri Lanka as the drug smugglers use Sri Lanka as distribution point, Sri Lankan strong youth’s creativity and skills are fading and at last end in rehab facilities.

Who are addict to drug, are in much pain in body and they need to be rescued because they are out of control of their body and mind. But this drug addiction doing much harm to a student and youth destroying their education and relationships. Before happening situations like this government must take steps to prevent drug smuggling. Government must make new rules and regulation and enhance security on navy ports and air ports even local transport system must be well checked.

Also as citizen what we need to do is educate people in even villages about the effect of drugs, and side effects, and mental effect by being a drug addict. The notification of drugs addiction and prevention must be delivered to schools, Government Officers, Private sector, and communities, Religious places all over the country. All Security units must be alerted of drug smugglers and distributers specially near schools and Tuition classes where children gather a lot.

Specially we need to come up with Buddhism principles to prevent children from drug use. When a children understand difference between good and bad he won’t go through bad side of the road. Its comes from heart of child, not by anyone forcing him. That’s why the Buddhism can be only way save the children from drug addiction.

Parents may not know yet, but their own child would be victim of drug addiction if they don’t pay enough attention to their children. So as a whole community and citizens of Sri Lanka everyone must be active in vanishing drug problem out of the country to make a better tomorrow for guardians of country.
